Mirror, Mirror

Description

The external mirrors of our station need constant maintenance. Care to lend a hand?

Start: Side Jobs, LeGuin Stronghold

Introduction

You have a job: Mirror, Mirror, accepted at LeGuin Stronghold in the Ross 154 system.

Speak with Reginald Smythe in LeGuin Organisational Affairs (gov't center)

Next NPC: Reginald Smythe, Government Center, LeGuin Stronghold

  • Introduce Yourself

LeGuin Organisational Affairs seems a rather sad place. What few government employees labor here have little to do, since their authority is largely ignored. However, one man sits upright, shoulders back, and is staring straight at you. This must be Reginald. You approach him.

Me: Hello, you must be Smythe! I'm <name> and I've offered to help clean the station mirrors.

Ser Reginal Smythe stares at you, his left eye twitching wildly, and points to a door.

Ser Reginald Smythe. That's “Ser Reginald Smythe”, thank you. Go through that door and follow the corridor. There will be specially designed suits at the end. Don one and instructions will appear in your CORETECHS.

Eager to get away from this pompous man, you follow his instructions and head down the corridor. There are indeed very strange spacesuits with a variety of unusual gadgets, but you're used to this by now. Pulling one on, you get instructions to enter a "transport tube." Doing so, you're grappled by magnetic clamps and immediately launched upwards into a bizarre array of huge mirrors. A menu appears on your CORETECHS screen.

Next area: Government Center, LeGuin Stronghold

  • Grease the Gears
  • Calibration
  • Resurface the Mirror

Resurface:
(Intelligence check)

The CORETECHS HUD display shows you how to pour resurfacing nanites onto your assigned mirror. A quick blast of your suit jets gets you above your mirror, while a flick of your wrist spreads the nanites evenly. Various micro-meteorite pits and cracks are filled before your eyes.

  • Grease the Gears
  • Calibration

Grease:
(Agility check)

Following the instructions, you twist around your assigned mirror and aim a tube labeled "WD-42" at the gears. A greyish fluid squirts out, simultaneously removing gunk and coating the gear mechanism.

  • Calibration

(Agility and Intelligence check)

A red light starts flashing on the diagnostics panel on the side of the mirror. Following the onscreen instructions, you run the mirror's self-calibration routine. After a bit of vibration from mirror servos, the mirror locks into a new position and the red light turns green.

  • Get Out of Here!

Your CORETECHS informs you that all routine mirror maintenance tasks have been successfully completed. You re-enter the transport tube and it seals around you. Magnetic grapples fix onto your suit and quickly bring you back down to the suit area you left from. It's time to get out of this suit and collect your pay.

  • Collect Your Pay

You exit the corridor and are back in the government center. Floating amongst the mirrors was beautiful, but you're happy to have your feet back on the ground.

As Ser Smythe regards you, his left eye stops twitching and grows still. You find this disturbing.

Ser Smythe: Thank you, <name>. Your work was … acceptable.

As you collect your pay, you reflect that Smythe … sorry, Ser Reginald Smythe … is an unpleasant man. But you're happy to have a paycheck.

Congratulations!

You have completed the 'Mirror, Mirror' job.

You have received 57.00 credits.
