Paper Town

Being sent to Nowhereville is a common occurrence, but as the reasoning becomes more and more contrived, you investigate who might benefit from this series of expulsions.

Level: 13
Start: Pressley Garnier, Bar, L 726-8 Jump Gate

Introduction

As you take a seat at the bar, a handsome bartender looks you over and fetches something from under the faux-wood bar countertop.

Pressley says Now, I don't want to judge a book by their cover, but I was asked to give this letter to a worldly visitor who has a knack for helping people out… Might you be the "<name>" I'm looking for?

He brings out an envelope, written in the station's signature paper, addressed to you. With a wink, the bartender leaves to give you some privacy. You pull the letter out of its envelope and scan the neat handwriting for signs of a sender - the last line declares it to be River Brentley. River is Lilah's parent, whom you met at the Paper Mill Tour. The letter reads:

"Dear <name>, do you have time to stop by my home? Something strange is going on and you might be able to help me figure out what happened. Even if you can't, you're invited to share some home-made blueberry pie with us! My address is below. Thank you in advance, River Brentley."

The address - 75 Sycamore Way - is in the township of Little Earth.

You have accepted the "Paper Town" mission.

"River! It's nice to see you.":

As you approach River's small home, you spot them repainting their white fence, which looks scuffed with shoe and ball imprints - Lilah's discarded sneakers and basketball being likely culprits. As River sees you, they put everything down and open a small wooden gate for you to pass.

Me River! It's nice to see you.

River says And you too, <name>! I'm sorry, you caught me while I'm tidying up. Come in, please!

"Hello River.":

As you approach River's small home, you spot them repainting their white fence, which looks scuffed with shoe and ball imprints - Lilah's discarded sneakers and basketball being likely culprits. As River sees you, they put everything down and open a small wooden gate for you to pass.

Me Hello River.

River says Hello <name>! Sorry, you caught me while I'm tidying up. Come in, please!

Either choice continues:

They lead you towards their house, as brick-red as all the others you've seen so far. There is a small wreath made of twigs and small fruits - or at least, what looks like twigs and fruits - decorating the door. A small label underneath reads "made by Lilah Zhang-Brentley ♥", with shaky handwriting. River gives the wreath a small smile as they lead you inside.

"How have you been?":

Me How have you been?

River says Not bad, all things considered. Lilah's doing fine at school, and I'm keeping busy.

"You said you needed my help?":

Me You said you needed my help?

Now that you're indoors, away from prying ears, River nods glumly.

River says Yes, that's right. Please, sit down.

They lead you towards a small faux-wood table that sits four people, at a squeeze. They head towards what is likely a kitchen, and return with a plate of small treats and two glasses of water. As they sit opposite you, the last remnants of their good mood dissipate.

River says The truth is, <name>, things haven't been quite as pleasant as they used to be. My brother-in-law, Youyu Zhang, used to work in the paper mill, but he's since been sent to Nowhereville. We… um…

River looks like they want to continue talking, but their words wouldn't come out. They clear their throat, take a sip of water, then try again.

River says I didn't see Youyu during our tour of the Paper Mill. I tried contacting him when we returned home, but by that point, he had been removed from Little Earth. It may all be a coincidence, but he was just as devoted to the Roswell values as we are. He lived on his own, just a few streets down. I… I don't know what to do. How to tell Lilah.

"Why was Youyu sent to Nowhereville?":

Me Why was Youyu sent to Nowhereville?

River says I don't know. Youyu and Houying - my late partner - arrived in Little Earth thirty cycles ago. They were always respectful of the Roswell ideals, and by the time I married Houying, they were both just as much a part of our community as anyone else. Youyu has always been so willing to help his neighbors, I can't imagine him getting sent away.

"So Youyu worked in the Paper Mill?":

Me So Youyu worked in the Paper Mill?

River says Yes, although he only started recently. I was hoping we'd bump into him during the tour, to surprise both him and Lilah. Maybe he was doing another shift, or he wasn't working that day. I never found out.

"What are the Roswell ideals?":

Me What are the Roswell ideals?

River says I'm sure I have a brochure here somewhere… I'll give you the short version for now. Our main goal is earning back the trust of the aliens from the first encounter back in Old Earth, by showing them the world as they saw it. It's why we dress the way we do, live in these sorts of houses, and limit our technology.

They pause to make sure you're following along before continuing.

River says Beyond that, and most importantly, is being a good neighbor. Any breaches in conduct are considered Crimes Against the Community. Most Crimes are frowned upon elsewhere, such as cheating, stealing and using physical violence. Others involve neglecting neighborly duties by being antisocial or avoiding the Greater Good tax.

"Why are you devoted to these Roswell ideals?":

Me Why are you devoted to these Roswell ideals?

River takes a few units to process your question. They take a treat from the plate between you and bring it to their mouth, only to stop and put it down before taking a bite.

River says I was born and raised here in Little Earth. As a child I loved thinking about the stars, and used to ask everyone in the port for stories and pictures from their travels. But from everything I saw, people were treated much better in Little Earth, so I decided to stay. Once Houying arrived and we started dating, it seemed like the perfect place to build our lives. …And it was.

"What's the Greater Good tax?":

Me What's the Greater Good tax?

River says Little Earth has quite a high tax rate. We use these taxes for the good of everyone, financing communal projects and spaces. It also helps pay for housing - everyone who is part of the Roswell Division is guaranteed a home for their family.

"I understand. How can I help?":

Me I understand. How can I help?

River takes a bite of the treat in front of them. As you wait, you realize from the smell that these are probably just rations shaped like cookies.

River says Go to Nowhereville and talk to Youyu. We're not really supposed to talk to people who commit Crimes Against the Community, that's part of why they live away from us. I just don't know what Youyu would have done to end up there… Whatever it is, I'll accept it. I've come to terms with it, in the abstract, but I want to hear it in his own words.

"I'm not sure I can help you.":

Me I'm not sure I can help you.

River says Oh. …Are you sure? It's not urgent. Maybe the next time your travels take you to Nowhereville…

"No, I'm sorry.":

Me No, I'm sorry.

River says Alright. Thank you for listening to me anyway, <name>. If you're ever around, feel free to drop by.

After some more small talk, you excuse yourself and leave River and Lilah's house.

You have failed the "Paper Town" mission. You can retake this mission and try again.

"Alright, I'll check next time I'm there.":

Me Alright, I'll check next time I'm there.

"I'll talk to him.":

Me I'll talk to him.

Both paths continue:

River says Thank you so much! Let me show you what he looks like…

River ushers you over to their mantlepiece, where you can see half a dozen framed photos, and points to one larger than the rest. You see a younger River holding a baby, standing between two people who are unmistakably siblings, if not twins. River points to everyone in turn.

River says That's me, back when I had fewer worries and no wrinkles… Lilah was just a cycle old here. That's Houying, standing to my right… And Youyu's there, holding Lilah's balloon.

River, encouraged by your presence, shows you a few other photos, before apologizing for keeping you so long. You should be able to find Youyu, now that you know what he looks like.

Find Youyu in the Ruins, Nowhereville.

  • Find Youyu

It's hard to spot Youyu among the people living in Nowhereville. As a visitor you're treated warmly enough, but they don't have much time to chat, as they attempt to make a living selling whatever items of value they can find in the ruins.

Explore the ruins to find Youyu.:
(Stamina check)

You check a few inhabited buildings, but it's hard to get an idea of where Youyu might be. Nowhereville is covered in rubble, with a few 'roads' of cleared path, but no signposts or anything that helps you find your way. However, while you're exploring, you spot a pair of spotless new arrivals being directed by a resident of Nowhereville.

A woman says You'll get used to being here, it might just take some time. Most of us… We're the same. We crossed that invisible decorum line, often on a bad day, and now… Well, you don't need to worry about that anymore. Let's just get you to the dormitory.

The rest of the short walk is silent, except for occasional sobbing from the new arrivals. The woman gives them a short hug before leading them inside the 'dormitory'.

Pay someone to tell you where Youyu is.:

You ask an older woman about Youyu, and offer her payment to jog her memory. She initially looks reluctant to accept it, but when you mention his family is worried about him, her features soften and she accepts.

You have given 10.00 credits.

The old woman says Thank you for your kindness. I don't know him myself, but if Youyu is new to Nowhereville, he's probably in the disused research labs. We arranged it as a sort of dormitory, where new people can spend some time getting their bearings.

She gives you a general idea how to get there, then gives you a small smile.

The old woman says Many of us got sent here on a bad day, when our smile slipped, when we accidentally crossed an invisible decorum line. We can't even get closure with our families… So I appreciate what you're doing.

Strike up friendly conversations and ask about Youyu.:
(Social check)

Failure:

You talk to anyone who stops to listen, but none of them seem to know Youyu.

Success:

Youyu is a recent arrival, so most residents of Nowhereville don't know him. However, someone is able to point you to a likely location - newcomers often congregate around the disused research labs, which now serve as a makeshift dormitory.

The tired woman says Roswell makes it sound like our crimes are unspeakable wrongs, but most of us just crossed an invisible line while going about our lives. Maybe your friend was having a rough day, said something in a biting tone, and got sent here. I hope you find him…

All choices continue:

Enter the 'dormitory' in the disused labs.:

You enter the set of disused labs that serve as a dormitory for newcomers. While the outside has been decorated with bits of colored paper, the inside is clearly not a comfortable space to live. Multiple people huddle under each thermal blanket, trying to keep warm. A Belter is hunched over a makeshift table, attempting to extricate metallic parts from a contraption while a small child tugs at their sleeve. Someone catches you looking and pulls you towards what might have been a lab bench, but is currently used as a kitchen.

The person says We're not here to be gawked at, visitor. What do you want?

  • "I'm looking for Youyu, on behalf of his family."

Me I'm looking for Youyu, on behalf of his family.

They look you up and down, then sigh and point at a room behind them.

They say Youyu is that way, but don't make trouble. We're keeping an eye on the dormitory.

  • "Youyu? River asked me to talk to you…"

Me Youyu? River asked me to talk to you…

Like River, he looks more careworn than in the photographs. He's sitting on the floor with two other people - one of them looks quite young, the other is middle-aged. As you explain why you're here, Youyu covers his eyes with his hands.

Youyu says Thank you, um…

Me <name>.

Youyu says Thank you, <name>. I'm glad River believes in me. Maybe if-

The youth says You can help us! I knew it was a conspiracy!

Youyu says Slow down and let me explain things first. The three of us - Joshua, Chelsea and I - were sent here on the same day, for reasons which we don't quite understand. We think they're related, but it's hard for us to do anything about it from here…

Listen to Chelsea's story.:

You ask Chelsea what happened.

Chelsea says I sell things in the flea market, some of it to Roswell people, some to tourists looking for 'authentic' things to take back with them. Fashion accessories, patterned curtains or cushions, picture frames, paper books… It's all completely Roswell-approved. I have no idea why they brought me here.

Chelsea crosses her arms, but continues to look at you. She doesn't seem to have much more to share.

Listen to Joshua's story.:

You urge Joshua to explain what happened.

Joshua says I snuck into the Employment Center on a dare. Robbie, my brother, was wondering how they decided what job he was suited for, because after he filled out his questionnaire, they gave him a really boring job. Robbie was too big to sneak in himself, so he was the lookout while I squeezed through a loose grate.

While Joshua's tone is generally defiant, the mention of his brother softens his voice.

Joshua says When I went in, I tried feeding the big machine that hole-punched paper that computers supposedly eat up, but I must have done it wrong. The machine listed an error, and had instructions on how to open it up to fix it. But the machine - this huge, room-sized machine - was actually just one of those small pads you visitors use to check things! And then… an alarm sounded, they caught us, and I guess since Robbie didn't see the pad, they let him go…

Joshua trails off. Youyu puts a hand on his shoulder, and Joshua takes deep breaths. He can't be more than twenty-five cycles old.

Listen to Youyu's story.:

You ask Youyu for his story.

Youyu says My shift in the Paper Mill was right after the big tour. I was clearing up the storage rooms when I noticed room DR-006 hadn't locked properly. Normally I would get my supervisor, but she was dealing with something related to the tour, so I tried to close the door myself. It wouldn't lock, though, and I had no idea why. So I went inside, to check if someone left their key in… And I saw this giant vat.

"What happened next?":

Me What happened next?

Youyu says My supervisor came back and saw me inside the room, fiddling with the door. I tried to explain what happened, and that I wouldn't tell anyone about the vat, but… She got me sent here. Maybe she always had it out for me? I didn't think seeing some paper-making equipment would get me reported to the Roswell Division.

"Lilah called it a stormy sea.":

Me Lilah called it a stormy sea.

Youyu looks stunned as you explain River and Lilah were there that day.

Youyu says I'm just glad they didn't get sent to Nowhereville… clearly the tour guide was more reasonable than my supervisor. When she came back, I was still trying to lock the door. I promised I wouldn't tell anyone, but she looked at me and… I didn't think she wanted me gone, but I can't think of any other reason for her to report me to the Roswell Division.

"Those are all suspicious circumstances.":

Me Those are all suspicious circumstances.

Joshua says That's exactly what I thought!

Chelsea says The question is… what links all of them, other than them happening the same day?

Youyu says Does River know anything that might help?

"I think River was hoping you would know.":

Me I think River was hoping you would know.

The three look at each other, a mixture of hopelessness and frustration taking root.

Youyu says Alright. Well… Listen, <name>, I could put together some credits for you, if you would help us out. My house and some of my things were Roswell property, but I brought some others I could sell for credits. Do you think you could look into our three incidents? There's bound to be something connecting them, something we can't see from here.

Joshua says Would you? Oh, then maybe… Maybe we can go back…

Chelsea says Don't get your hopes up, Josh. …That said, I want to know what happened. I'll spare a few credits too, if you can check my shop, Chelsea's Chromatic Checkpoint.

"I'll try, but I make no promises.":

Me I'll try, but I make no promises.

Youyu says Thank you. Really. It's more than I could have hoped for, <name>. Feel free to share what you find with River. And tell Lilah… No, just follow River's lead when it comes to Lilah. I'm sure they've had to tell her something by now. They'll know best.

"Of course I'll help.":

Me Of course I'll help.

Youyu says Thank you, <name>. This means everything to us… Feel free to share what you find with River. And tell Lilah… No, just follow River's lead when it comes to Lilah. I'm sure they've had to tell her something by now. They'll know best.

Either choice continues:

Youyu takes a deep breath, then forces a smile for you.

Confirm Joshua's story by checking the machine in the Employment Center.

Next area: Employment, L 726-8 Jump Gate

  • Check the employment center

As soon as you walk into the Employment Center, a career counselor with a neat mustache waves at you from one of the small metal tables.

The counselor says Please, come in! I'm Chester, and I'm here to help! If you're not sure what work you'd like to do, you can fill out one of our questionnaires and we'll help you find the best fit!

"How do these questionnaires work?":

Me How do these questionnaires work?

Chester says For your part, all you need to do is answer our questions! Afterwards, our team will turn your answers into special punched paper that our state-of-the-art machines can read. After some complex calculations, it will figure out what would make the best use of your skills!

Fill out the questionnaire.:

You take the proffered questionnaire and fill it out with a black 'pencil'. It's multiple choice, so it's not hard for you to go through it quickly. Some questions are as expected - whether you prefer manual, mental or social labor - while others ask strange things, like whether you prefer sweet or salty food.

Chester says If you're not sure, you can leave it blank. The more information we have, the better, but we'll find something for you nonetheless!

Once you're done, you pass your questionnaire back to Chester, who makes a show of folding your paper in half and not looking at your results.

"And now I wait?":

Chester says Indeed! You're number 34, so when we call that number, come up and get your results. It shouldn't take more than a segment. It's all perfectly organized and anonymous - unless you want career counseling, in which case we can go to a quiet corner and talk about your options.

Ask him to show you the machine at work.:
(Social check)

Failure:

You try to convince Chester to show you how questionnaires are processed, but he seems unsure about it.

Success

Me I would love to see how this machine works. The way Little Earth uses paper, even for computer programs, is very impressive. I'm not a connoisseur or anything, but I can't even picture technology from before the Catastrophe…

Chester seems simultaneously happy you're interested, but also a bit worried. He looks around the nearly empty Employment Center, then nods to you.

Chester says Alright, follow me. But you can't touch anything, understood?

After you agree, he takes you through a door at the back of the Center. After traversing a small hallway, Chester opens the door to a room that's crowded, by virtue of the large computing unit taking up most of the space.

Chester says This is our masterpiece. After we've turned your questions into an appropriate input… Well, let me show you!

Chester beams as he heads to a corner of the room, where a small table sits piled with papers. He turns his back to you as he rifles through the stacks.

Stick your hand into the paper feed!:

You do the first thing that comes to your mind and stick your hand into the slot where paper would go. Inside is… Nothing. You're confused for a second, then you notice a flash, the kind a pad would use to take an image in a dark place. With the light, you see that there is just a pad inside of this hollow 'computer' shell. You quickly turn back around and look expectantly at Chester, who thankfully didn't notice the flash.

Chester says This is the kind of input we'd be looking at. Now, when you feed this paper, the machine will start to process…

Inspect the device.:

Without Chester hovering over you, it's easier to scrutinize the device. While the outside looks outdated in a way that could perhaps be Old Earth machinery, it looks… strange. You edge closer and prod one of the components lightly and notice how light it seems - even without being an expert, it's clear these are hollow metallic boxes, masquerading as complicated machinery, cables snaking around with no particular purpose. You quickly turn back around and smile at Chester, who triumphantly holds a piece of paper.

Chester says This is the kind of input we'd be looking at. Now, when you feed it the results like this, the machine will start to process them…

Either choice continues:

Chester explains everything in detail, and it takes almost a segment for you to extricate yourself from the crammed room. By the time you're done, even Chester has forgotten about your questionnaire. Whatever your theories are, it's clear that it's not an Old Earth computer.

Now that you've confirmed Joshua's story, the next place on your list is the market, where Chelsea used to work.

Sneak in to look at the machine when he's not looking.:
(Agility check)

Failure:

The Employment Center, while not busy, still has enough staff around that it's hard to get around unnoticed. You wait for the right moment so you can sneak in undetected.

Success:

After Chester leaves, you wait for an opportune moment, then slide into the back room, behind a distracted counselor. You traverse a short hallway and scan the nearby rooms, until you find one taken over by a huge computing unit and a spindly table holding a pile of hole-punched papers.

You feed a sheet of paper into the machine and notice a bright flash, the kind a modern pad would use to take an image in a dark place. You feed it a second page and look closely - with the light, you can tell that there is, indeed, a modern pad inside this hollow 'computer' shell. That's proof enough, so leave as surreptitiously as you entered. Now that you've confirmed Joshua's story, the next place on your list is the market, where Chelsea used to work.

You look around the strip mall for Chelsea's Chromatic Checkpoint, but can't seem to find it anywhere. However, you spot an old flier, which lists its location as shop 3C. From what you can tell, it used to be nestled between a hardware store and a boutique, but has since been replaced by Candis Candy. Its owner, Candis Cookson, might be able to tell you more.

  • Get Candis' attention.

You try to catch her eye, but Candis is busy serving a group of excited children, each trying to get as many sweets as their allowance permits. You'll be waiting here for quite a while if you don't do something.

Buy the most expensive sweets in the shop for 50 credits.:

While Candis is swamped, you grab the most expensive thing you can find - a large sweet assortment box. It even comes with a little card describing all eight flavors, from chocolates filled with citrus-flavored jelly or decadent synth-cream, to synthehol-soaked cherries in a sugar shell. As you approach Candis at the till, she looks relieved to be talking to an adult.

Candis says Welcome to Candis Candy! And wow, what a great choice you've got there! It's great as a gift for your better half, a treat for yourself, or even a token of apology. Let me get you a nice gift box for it. …Right, that'll be fifty credits, please. Oh, but don't rush. What brings you here? What's your story?

Me I need to know why Chelsea was sent to Nowhereville.

Candis looks a bit surprised. The shop's noise levels are loud enough to cover a hushed conversation, so she asks you to lean closer.

Persuade Candis to help you.:
(Social check)

Failure:

You try to catch Candis' eye, but every time she turns to you, another toddler walks up to her with a fistful of candy.

Success:

While Candis is swamped, you stand resolutely in front of the age-restricted synthehol sweets and keep trying to get her attention. As soon as she spots you, she tells the children she has to help everyone equally, so they'll have to wait a few units. She looks relieved as she walks up to you.

Candis says These lovely rascals can be a handful, let me tell you… But welcome to Candis Candy! What brings you here today? Gifts for your better half, a treat for yourself, apology chocolates? I can help you choose, if you tell me your story.

Me I need to know why Chelsea was sent to Nowhereville.

Candis pauses for a second, looking around. Thankfully the shop is crowded with children, loud enough to cover a hushed conversation.

Buy a 5 credit sweet box from Candis.:

While Candis is swamped, you pick out a cheap box of sweets and take it to the till. She looks relieved to be talking to an adult.

Candis says Welcome to Candis Candy! That's a great choice you've got there - a variety box for those on a budget. You've got standard sweets, a few citrus-flavored, some with a creamy filling… That'll be five credits, please. Oh, but don't rush. What brings you here? What's your story?

Me I need to know why Chelsea was sent to Nowhereville.

Candis looks a bit surprised. The shop's noise levels are loud enough to cover a hushed conversation, so she asks you to lean closer.

All choices continue:

Candis says I was wondering that, too. I've been eyeing this space for some time, but this isn't how I wanted things to go. From what I heard, she didn't deal with anything dangerous - just cushions and books and the like. Even if she had some more… let's say, advanced items in her shop, it would be the Roswell shopper's fault just as much as hers. Maybe she acted ungraciously towards a customer?

She takes a few units, tapping a finger on her cheek absentmindedly. Her lollipop earrings bounce slightly with the motion.

Candis says Maybe it's because she stopped wearing high heels and didn't get her hair permed. Do you know, she used to wear trousers in her house! Anna said she spotted it when she walked past Chelsea's living room window. I know none of those are usually Crimes, but she was somewhere visible, here in the mall. She should be setting a good example…

As the children get bored of waiting and approach the till, she makes a show of taking your payment, then ushers the next person in line. Your next stop is the Paper Mill, to see if you can learn what happened with Youyu.

You have given 50.00 credits.

The Security Officer says I'm sorry, Ser, but due to the terms of the agreement you signed with Little Earth Paper Products, after the… incident at the Paper Mill, you are no longer allowed in its premises. While we cannot forbid you from talking to private citizens, it would be in everyone's best interests for you to move on.

  • Talk to River.

This time you find River at home, hunched in front of their living room table, their attention focused on various paper documents. They apologize and quickly tidy everything while you sit and wait. Now that you're on your second visit, you notice that while the house looks large from the outside, the rooms are awkwardly small.

River says <name>, did you find Youyu? What happened?

  • "I found him, but he doesn't know why he was exiled…"

Me I found him, but he doesn't know why he was exiled to Nowhereville. He accidentally saw what was in the 'storm' vat while he was tidying up the Paper Mill, but he didn't understand what it was, or think that was enough to send him to Nowhereville. There were also two other people who came in that same day, and they were just as confused.

You explain what happened during your search. River listens intently, fidgeting with their bowtie all the while, and eventually sighs.

River says I have to admit, I was hoping I was wrong… I looked into that day myself, after you left, and I found something strange. Usually a committee determines whether someone has committed a Crime Against the Community, but that day, three excommunication orders were signed by the Mayor himself. And the reasons listed were weak at best.

They look out the window, struggling to make eye contact.

River says Both Youyu and Joshua's files claim their Crimes were "entering forbidden areas without permission". Youyu's makes some sense, but Joshua is underage. They never send kids straight to Nowhereville, they always give them warnings first… It's horrible to even think about it. Chelsea's file said she "trafficked forbidden materials", which could mean anything from illegal drugs to anti-Roswell propaganda. The lack of clarity has to be on purpose…

"Candis blamed the clothes Chelsea wears at home…":

Me Candis blamed the clothes Chelsea wears at home…

River says What do you mean?

Me She said something about not using high heels, or wearing trousers at home instead of a dress?

River stands up and waves at their own attire with a flourish. The combination of slacks, blouse and bowtie is not something you've seen often.

River says I wouldn't be part of Little Earth if the rules weren't somewhat accommodating. While we can't be sure whether people were openly non-binary at that point of Old Earth history, and most attire was heavily gendered, there are certain things we aren't willing to compromise. If Chelsea's documents had claimed "improper attire" I would look into this immediately… However, it might just be Candis' conjecture.

"What's considered anti-Roswell propaganda?":

Me What's considered anti-Roswell propaganda?

River says Anything created by residents of Little Earth that goes against Roswell values could be considered anti-Roswell propaganda. In reality, there's usually a jury of people who decide if it's enough of a problem to be considered a Crime, but that doesn't seem to have been the case here.

"How did you find out their Crimes?":

Me How did you find out their Crimes?

River says I sometimes act as a translator for official documents. These documents in particular… I may have encouraged the Mayor's secretary to let me translate them sooner rather than later, since they seemed so important. He must not have realized that Youyu and I are related, given our different surnames, otherwise he would have given them to someone else.

"Do you know the Mayor?":

Me Do you know the Mayor?

River says We've only spoken once or twice. He's quite a prominent presence in the station, but I don't think many people know him personally.

Finish asking questions and start working on a plan.:

Having laid out everything you both know, you start to formulate a plan.

River says …As much as Youyu's circumstances hurt, it's not the most unusual of the three. Joshua's case is surprising because he's young - sneaking into the Employment Center at night and tampering with equipment counts as a Crime. And depending on what Chelsea bought or sold, it may be more or less reasonable that it would be considered a crime.

Me How do we find that out?

River stars twirling the end of their bowtie, then stops, feeling a bit self-conscious.

River says Everyone I know in the Roswell group cares about the people of Little Earth. They want to be fair, and they want the rules to be clear. Outside of this station, only the Prometheans really understand us, so we need to present a united front, have strong community ties. However… it's possible that this is personal matter for the Mayor. If, for example, he had a dispute with Chelsea, or had something against Joshua's family, or Youyu…

River shakes their head.

River says Perhaps we'll be able to find evidence of this in the Mayor's office. He might have something of Chelsea's confiscated, or evidence of an exchange he's trying to cover up. But he doesn't meet with most people, so it would be hard to look at those via legitimate means…

"I'll find out what he's hiding.":

Me I'll find out what he's hiding.

River says You will? Are you sure? I could let you into the building, but that's all the help I can give… Thank you, <name>. Regardless of what happens, if the Mayor isn't being transparent, all of Roswell will want to know. I can request an official signature on the documents I've already finished translating - that'll work as a pretext to get us into the City Hall. I'll need a segment to get everything ready, so meet me there, alright?

"I suppose I'm helping, then?":

Me I suppose I'm helping, then?

River says I… I couldn't ask you that. You're a visitor, which makes it easier for you to act, but it also means it's not your fight.

"I'm sorry, you're on your own.":

Me I'm sorry, you're on your own.

River Alright. Thanks for what you've done to help, <name>. At least I know Youyu is safe for now…

River chats with you for a little longer, but they seem too preoccupied. Eventually you excuse yourself and leave them to their plans.

You have completed the "Paper Town" mission.

"It's okay, I'll help.":

Me It's okay, I'll help.

River says Really? …Thank you, <name>. Regardless of what happens, if the Mayor isn't being transparent, all of Roswell will want to know. I can request an official signature on the documents I've already finished translating - that'll work as a pretext to get us into the City Hall. I'll need a segment to get everything ready, so meet me there, alright?

Meet River outside the Gov't Center, the City Hall.

  • "Are you ready?"

Me Are you ready?

River says Yes, I've got everything I need with me. Just remember - I can only get you as far as I'm allowed, which is the Public Courts. You'll have to make your way to the Mayor's office on your own. And don't bring any evidence with you. Use your, um, brain chip's picture-taking function. If he notices you've taken something, he might come after you.

You nod at each other and enter the City Hall. The rhythmic noise of typewriter keys clacking and footsteps hurrying up and down aisles already speeds up your pulse. River looks a little nervous, but not so much so that you're worried. You eventually walk up to a set of double doors, and River pulls out their consultant pass.

River says Hello, Josephine! Just delivering some documents for case X-278 that needed translation into Gaule. It's a last-minute job.

Josephine says Encore?

River says Oui, encore. Ils m’ont donné deux témoignages hier, que je dus finir de traduire pour aujourd’hui. C’est toujours pareil avec eux…

Josephine smiles, shaking her head, and lets you both pass. You fall a step behind River as they lead the way, and soon find yourself in front of the public courts.

River says The offices are there, on your left. I'll stay here and distract people if I can, but there's only so many friendly chats I can have before it's suspicious. Good luck, <name>. I'll see you back home.

As River chats to another guard on duty, you follow someone through the large double doors leading to the offices. There are plenty of people here, some of which already look at you suspiciously.

Avoid people and sneak into the Mayor's office.:
(Agility check)

Failure:

You attempt to sneak into the Mayor's office, but there are too many people who all recognize each other. The tea break room is the only place you can stand alone without drawing attention, so you retreat there and wait for the right time to sneak into the Mayor's office.

Success:

You finally spot an opening and dash from the tea break room to the Mayor's office. You were expecting the door to be locked, but apparently he doesn't feel the need to do so, and once inside you realize why. Everything within reach is decorative - posters, vases, statues, books - while all important documents are kept under lock and key, in large, heavy filing cabinets bolted onto the floor.

Bluff your way to the Mayor's office.:
(Social check)

Me Excuse me, I don't like to be left waiting. The Mayor said he'd have time for me to explain the current state of affairs in the Maid of Orléans, but I've been standing here for a segment! Could I at least wait in his office?

A tired-looking assistant says Oh, um, of course. I'm sorry, I didn't realize he - never mind. Let me get the door for you…

The assistant lets you in, and indicates a comfortable seat you can take while they go fetch the Mayor. Knowing you don't have much time left, you scan the room. Everything within reach is decorative - posters, vases, statues, books - while all important documents are kept under lock and key, in large, heavy filing cabinets bolted onto the floor.

Either success continues:

Use strength to break the cabinet locks.:
(Strength check)

Failure:

You work hard using all tools at your disposal, but the locks are hard to break without making too much noise. You manage to unlock one drawer, but none of the documents inside are recent. You'll have to keep trying.

Success:

After breaking a couple of locks as quietly as you can manage, you come across the most recently dated drawer, housing documents from the past cycle. You're not sure what you're looking for at first, but as you go down the list of named files, one catches your eye - Chelsea Stratford.

You open her file and find only one piece of paper - no report, nothing about being sent to Nowhereville. The paper is coated in plastic, and appears to be a relic of the past, likely pre-Cat, perhaps even Old Earth. You start to read it, but a loud noise outside reminds you anyone could walk in. You use your CORETECHS to take an image of the document, put it back, then try to organize the locks so they don't look quite so obviously broken into.

Deduce how the locks work.:
(Intelligence check)

Failure:

It's clear that these locks are odd, but you can't figure out why. They look like they should be easy to open, but there's some kind of additional mechanism you can't quite work out.

Success:

After comparing various locks to each other, and some schematics downloaded from the Mesh, you realize that these are dual locks - they need a physical key as well as a digital one. Once you know that, it becomes much easier to unlock them, and you begin to search the drawers. Soon you notice a filing pattern, and use it to find the section for this current cycle, although it still houses dozens of files. One name quickly jumps out at you - Chelsea Stratford.

You open her file and find only one piece of paper, but not the report River knew about. This paper is coated in plastic, and appears to be a relic of the past, likely pre-Cat, perhaps even Old Earth. You start to read it, but a loud noise outside reminds you anyone could walk in. You use your CORETECHS to take an image of the document, put it back, then try to re-lock the cabinets. Unfortunately, it would take too long to reprogram them, so you just put them back in place and leave them unlocked.

Either success continues:

  • Get out of the Gov't Center.

If you sneaked in:

Sneaking out is much easier than sneaking in. Everyone appears to be preoccupied with a case involving Gaule tourists, so they pay you no mind as you go towards the publicly accessible parts of the City Hall. Soon you're home free.

If you bluffed:

Getting out is easier than coming in. With the same expression that says "I'm tired of waiting around", you leave the Mayor's office and stomp towards the courts, then to the publicly accessible parts of the City Hall. Everyone appears to be preoccupied with a case involving Gaule tourists, so they pay you no mind. Soon you've left the City Hall.

Meet up with River at their Residence.

Next NPC: River Brentley, Residences, L 726-8 Jump Gate

  • "I found something."

River is peering over their fence, waiting for you to arrive. They smile as you approach.

Me I found something.

River says That's amazing, <name>, thank you! Please, come inside.

You enter the Zhang-Brentley household for the third time, and this time are also greeted by Lilah.

Lilah says Zaza, why is <name> here? You didn't tell me someone was coming over to play!

River says It was a surprise! <name> just needs to help me with work for a few units, then we can have dinner, and we'll play afterwards. Why don't you go get ready?

Lilah happily sprints up the stairs, presumably to her room. River pulls out a sheet of paper and asks you to read what you found in the office.

  • Check your CORETECHS and read the document.

Me This was in Chelsea's file. "Beware the Red Scare, and the threat it poses to our American Dream! Communism is practiced in those faraway Red countries, and it means no one gets what they deserve. Here in America, we work hard to achieve our dreams, to own a lovely house so that our beautiful children can lead happy lives."

You can't read River's expression as they transcribe your words, but when you pause, they urge you to continue.

Me "Look at any photos of people living in Communist countries, and you'll see poverty and neglect. Is that what we want? Would you work, if you received the same amount of money as someone who just watched television all day? Where is the fairness in that? No, it is our enterprising spirit and dedication that makes us the great nation we are today!"

The article goes on for another few paragraphs. By the time you're done reading, River's fast transcription skills have captured everything on paper.

River says Is there a date?

Me The top right corner says apostrophe-four-eight… but I'm not sure what that means.

River says Most times before the Catastrophe are lost to us. However… I have heard some prominent Roswell members insist that forty-seven is "the year contact occurred". Forty-seven seems too low a number for a date… But it might help place this article soon after first contact. If that's true, then the consequences are astounding.

"How so?":

Me How so?

River says While most stations currently follow Capitalism, we have made various concessions. Everyone is allocated food and water rations, for example. Here in Little Earth we take that further, allocating everyone a home and a job, as long as they share our beliefs. Our Greater Good Tax means that most people end up having similar incomes… Not unlike Communism.

"Because of the American Dream?":

Me Because of the American Dream?

River says And our interpretation of it, yes. While most stations currently follow Capitalism, we have made various concessions. Everyone is allocated food and water rations, for example. Here in Little Earth we take that further, allocating everyone a home and a job, as long as they share our beliefs. Our Greater Good Tax means that most people end up having similar incomes… Not unlike Communism.

"Because it mentions Communism?":

Me Because it mentions Communism?

River says Exactly.

All choices continue:

Their eyes light up, and they start twirling the end of their bowtie.

River says We've worked hard to interpret American values at the time - the balance between freedom, family, and community - using what we know of that time period. But this fear people had, fear of not getting what they "deserved", seemed to outweigh what consider basic human rights and decency here in Little Earth. The Mayor could have seen this as a threat to his position, or Roswell itself, so he tried to silence Chelsea.

"How do you feel about the document, River?":

Me How do you feel about the document, River?

River says I love Little Earth's sense of community, of solidarity. I think what we have is, in some ways, the distillation of kind, neighborly living. But during first contact, the visitors might have seen people who fended only for themselves, who followed capitalism the way other stations do now - a way that is selfish rather than neighborly. I… think I need time to process all this.

Lilah says Zaza, I'm bored! Can we have dinner?

"Do you think Chelsea knew?":

Me Do you think Chelsea knew?

River says If she didn't tell you about the document, then maybe she didn't know its importance. It might have been one page amongst many in a magazine or a folder.

Lilah says I'm ready for food now! Can we stop talking and eat?

"What about Youyu and Joshua?":

Me What about Youyu and Joshua?

River says I'm not sure. This is such a big discovery… Maybe the two of them were just a smokescreen. Er, stardust screen, if you prefer. It doesn't single any of them out, so perhaps he could claim he was just trying to push people through the system faster.

Lilah says Dinner! I'm ready for dinner!

"Alright, let's have dinner.":

Me Alright, let's have dinner.

River says Help me bring things out, Lilah.

River bids you to stay seated while they bring food out. River places what station advertisements have led you to believe is a "roast turkey", likely biomeat with fungal trimmings. Lilah brings a bowl of sauce and some form of vegetables. The three of you help yourselves to food - Lilah eating her food fast, River taking their time - and make easy conversation about your travels. After the meal, River brings out a homemade blueberry pie. The taste is a bit hard to place, smooth and sweet.

Lilah says I love blue berry pie! Zaza only makes it when I have friends over, or when Uncle Youyu comes to visit.

River says It's good to have something nice for special occasions.

With downcast eyes, River struggles to smile for Lilah.

If you bought the 50-credit sweets:

  • Offer them the sweet assortment you bought.

Me Thank you for the meal, everything was great. Before I forget, I bought you this.

River opens the gift box and looks stunned.

River says Are you sure, <name>? These aren't cheap, I'm not sure I can accept them…

Me I'm sure.

River says Thank you. Look, Lilah, <name> got us some especially nice chocolates. Some of them are for adults only, so Zaza will have them, but you can have the rest after dinner-

Lilah says We never have chocolates! Thank you!

Lilah runs up to you, and gives you a hug. Her smile is contagious, and River is smiling as well.

If you bought the 5-credit sweets:

  • Offer them the sweet assortment you bought.

Me Thank you for the meal, everything was great. It isn't much, but I want you to have this.

River opens the box and shows it to Lilah, who runs over and gives you a hug.

Lilah says Thank you! Can I have some now?

River says Why don't we save them for later? We just had pie, and there's some left for tomorrow too. Remember, future Lilah will be very happy to eat these.

Lilah goes back to her seat. Her smile is contagious, and puts River in a better mood.

If you didn't buy anything:

  • "Thank you for the meal, everything was great."

Me: Thank you for the meal, everything was great.

River says: No, thank you for all your help, <name>. …And for visiting. It's nice to meet new friendly faces.

All paths continue:

Lilah says Can we play now, Zaza?

River says What do you think, <name>?

"Sure, let's play.":

Me Sure, let's-

Before you can finish, someone loudly knocks at the door. Lilah heads for the door, but River stops her.

River says I'll get the door this time. Lilah, why don't you get your toys out in the back yard? <name> and I will come out as soon as we're done talking to these work people.

Lilah pulls a face, but she goes upstairs to collect her toys.

There's another loud knock, and River opens the door. You spot someone with a badge reading "Sheriff" wearing a blue uniform, along with two officers in brown suits. With their matching outfits and haircuts, it's hard to tell the officers apart.

The Sheriff says Excuse me, may we come in?

River says Of course, officers.

River leads them to the table and offers them a seat, but they refuse.

Stay standing.:

You stay standing, and River follows your lead.

Sit down.:

You take a seat, and River follows your lead.

Either choice continues:

The Sheriff says We're here to talk to <name> about breakin' into the Mayor's office. Now, the Mayor is gracious, 'specially to outsiders. He sent us along with some papers for you to sign, so that if you did happen to see somethin' in his office, you won't tell anyone. What you've committed is a Crime, but the Mayor is offerin' you a hand.

The sheriff pulls out a document and passes it over to you. It looks similar to what you signed after the Paper Mill tour - perhaps their preferred way of dealing with visitors.

The Sheriff says You look it over too, Mx. Brentley. If <name> told you anythin' already, you let us know and we'll get you one too.

River skims through the document. It's quite reasonable… as long as you tell no one what you saw in the Mayor's office, or what lead to you breaking in. It would mean not sharing the document on the Red Menace, or the files on Youyu, Chelsea and Joshua.

Decide whether to sign the documents or not.

"Do you have proof to go with your claims?":

Me Do you have proof to go with your claims?

The Sheriff says There are cameras in the Mayor's office. People saw you in the corridor leadin' up to it. There's plenty of evidence.

Sign the documents and keep quiet.:

Me Alright, I'll sign.

River looks pained, but they nod as you borrow a writing utensil to sign the documents.

The Sheriff says We're all square, then! Thank you ever so much. As for you, Mx. River, I hope you stay out of trouble.

River says Of course, officers. If that's everything, may I see you out?

As they nod, River escorts them the few paces it takes to reach the door, holding it open for them. The three officials tip their hats as they leave. Once River is sure they're gone, they sit at the table with you.

River says I'm glad you're not in trouble. I found Youyu's file myself, so I can decide what to do with that. As for the Red Menace document… Perhaps someone else will find it, or Chelsea will remember what it's about. I'm sure there's a way to make this work… To help Youyu.

Lilah says Uncle Youyu's visiting? Where is he?

River says He's still busy, but maybe some other time. You got your toys out, Lilah? Why don't we all play catch in the back yard?

Lilah takes your hand and River's, leading you both to the backyard. You toss a ball back and forth, have a tea party, and color some picture books together. Once Lilah is asleep, River asks you to leave, reminding you they have much planning to do, but now that your part is done, you can rest.

Refuse to sign on principle, even if you're done being involved.:

Me I'm sorry, but I can't sign this. I'll accept whatever consequences there are for sneaking into the Mayor's office, but I won't promise to keep what I found to myself.

All three of them look at you, though they're not exactly surprised. The Sheriff sighs and takes back the documents.

The Sheriff says It's up to you. We'll have to write it up, 'course, and it will affect your standin' in the Consortium. As for you, Mx. River… Stay out of trouble.

River says Of course, officers. If that's everything, may I see you out?

If you're done being involved:

River says Thank you, <name>. This means a lot to me.

Me I won't risk uploading what we found to the Mesh, but I wasn't going to sign.

River says I still appreciate it. I'm sure the files on Youyu and the others will find some way of being leaked - a way which won't implicate you, of course. The Red Menace article as well. …Maybe then Youyu will be able to come back.

Lilah says Uncle Youyu's visiting? Where is he?

River says Not here yet, he's still busy. You got your toys out, Lilah? Why don't we all play catch in the back yard?

Lilah takes your hand and River's, leading you both to the backyard. You toss a ball back and forth, have a tea party, and color some picture books together. River says: Thank you. Maybe then… Youyu and the others will be able to come back.
