The Ice Must Flow

Description

We always need people to unload the ice bots.

Start: Side Jobs, LeGuin Stronghold

Introduction

You have a job: The Ice Must Flow, accepted at LeGuin Stronghold in the Ross 154 system.

Go to the port and speak with Cameron. He'll be happy for the help.

Next NPC: Cameron Paj, Port, LeGuin Stronghold

  • Speak to Cameron

The elevator to the port has seats, for which you're grateful. The seatbelts hold you in place as the elevator slows down and suddenly there's no noticeable gravity. The doors slide open and Cameron Paj is there to help you out.

Cameron Paj:Hi, <name>. Tumaini flashed me to meet you here. Unloading the ice bots is pretty straightforward, but if you're not used to zero G, it can be dangerous. Are you up for it?

Me: Absolutely, Ser Paj. This isn't my first rodeo.

Cameron Paj: Excellent. Let's get you suited up and I'll explain how it works.

Cameron pushes off and floats towards a row of lockers. You struggle to keep up with him. You manage to land close by and he hands you a standard-issue light EVA suit. After you slip into it, he explains how to grapple the bots and unload them. He points you to the ice bot facility before jumping away to help a drifting worker stabilize themself.

Next area: Port, LeGuin Stronghold

  • Clamb the Ice Bot

(Agility check)

You successfully guide IceBot 39S-L into a berth and clamp it down.

  • Open the Hold

(Agility check)

Failure

You float above IceBot 39S-L, but keep floating away. Only your safety tether keeps you from floating into a launch tube.

Success

You float above IceBot 39S-L and unlatch the ice bay.

  • Eject the Ice

(Agility and Intelligence check)

Failure

The ice bot’s controls seem easy enough. You read the instructions and press a red button, accidentally sounding a collision warning klaxon.

Success

The ice bot’s controls seem easy enough. You read the instructions and press a blue button. A huge block of pure, clear ice slides out of the ice bot.

  • Clamp the Ice

(Agility check)

You float back down to the berth entrance and punch the button for the ice clamp to remove the ice. A hatch opens in the wall and a claw shoots out quickly, grabbing the ice and pulling it inside.

  • Launch IceBot 39S-L

(Agility and Intelligence check)

With the ice unloaded, the ice bot’s hold automatically closes. You punch the button to release the clamps and a quick blast from maneuvering thrusters sends the ice bot flying back into the void of space.

Next NPC: Cameron Paj, Port, LeGuin Stronghold

  • Alert the Supervisor

You head back to Cameron, relieved to be done unloading ice. You can appreciate just how dangerous it is to work in zero-g.

Cameron Paj: Hey there, <name>. I have to admit, you handled yourself in zero-G better than I thought. Good job!

Congratulations!

You have completed the 'The Ice Must Flow' job.

You have received 58.00 credits.

Notes

  • The name of this side job is a reference to the line "The spice must flow," from the 1984 science-fiction film Dune
