The Lost Children

Level: 4
Start: Shadiya Reeve, Market, Daedalus

Introduction

There is a commotion by the booth where a young woman has parkas for sale. A Belter in the attire of a cargo pilot is in a heightened state of worry and fright. Shadiya Reeve gasps, drawing attention to the Belter and the Parka Shop Girl.

Thom says: My sons! My boys! They gone away. Somebody took my boys!

Thom Ling is near a booth that sells parkas in The Market district of Daedalus station. He is in a panic and frantic.

You have accepted the "The Lost Children" mission.

  • Ask Thom to clarify.
  • Ask the Parka Shop Girl if she saw anything.

Ask Thom to clarify

Me: “Your boys? Who took your boys?”

Thom says: They ain’t here no more! Where are my boys?! Jox?! Joh?! Boys come on out, I want to take you home… Your momma’s gonna be… she’s gonna be…

  • Decline getting involved.
  • Ask him what happened and if assistance is needed.

Ask him what happened and if assistance is needed

Me: Do you have any idea what could have happened? Could they have wandered off? How can I help?

Shaking and wringing his long bony hands, he mutters with swift urgency.

Thom says: It was just, I was just turned around for a moment. They’d never run off. I was just getting her to sign for… I knew they should have stayed with their momma. I shouldn’t have brought them here. Not here…Not around these people.

Thom Ling sneers in frightened anger toward the Parka Shop Girl.

  • Turn to the Parka Shop Girl.

Turn to the Parka Shop Girl

Me: Do you know anything that could help this guy? He's clearly on edge.

The Parka Shop Girl shakes her head with a frown. She hears your words, but is fixated on his. Her loosely piled hair of brown flops with her motions of denial. She recoils in reaction while shoving her fist-tight hands into her beige and dingy green coveralls; the typical garb of the Dead Eyes of Daedalus.

The Parka Shop Girl says: People? What people?

She questions indignantly and sudden scorn.

  • Try to intervene.

Try to intervene

Me: …Well, maybe what he meant was….

Thom shouts, drawing the attention of many in the Market.

Thom says: Damn Dead Eyes! YOU damn Dead Eyes! Y’all took my boys from me! I want my boys back! You give me back my sons!

  • The Parka Shop Girl turns to you.

The Parka Shop Girl turns to you

The Parka Shop Girl seems wounded by the remark and lowers her frown further before measuring her voice to speak to only you.

The Parka Shop Girl says: The Station Security office… is right down that lane.

She points to an intersection of inter-station avenues.

The Parka Shop Girl says: We want no trouble. This one’s antics should be taken to Security.

Her pity has melted into anger. Her pained outrage is obvious.

The Parka Shop Girl says: Could be the Belter is eager to accuse others as he knows the children are safe and well? Who is to say. Security would know best.

New goals: Something strange is going on. Best to go to Consortium Security and report the missing children.

  • Accuse Parka Shop Girl of involvement and threaten to report her to Security
  • Take the Belter to the Security station.
  • Agree with The Parka Shop Girl and report the Belter for suspicious behavior.

Take the Belter to the Security station

Me: Let’s get you to the security office, huh? I’ll go with you. You said your boys names are Jox and Joh? What’s your name?

Thom says: Thom. My name is Thom Ling. I have to find them! We have to go … schedule, the schedule or I lose my job. I have to … we have to keep to the schedule.

New goals: Travel to Security with Thom Ling to report the missing children.

Go to Security and talk to Consortium Security Sergeant Rosa

Next NPC: Consortium Security Sergeant Rosa, Security, Daedalus

  • Approach Sergeant Rosa.

Approach Sergeant Rosa

The Consortium Security office of Daedalus is impeccable and orderly. Security officers, in their spotless uniforms, toil behind desks with meticulously color-coded paperwork and files. The office is bright and calming blue lights intermingle with bright whites. It stands as the sole Consortium visual presence among the vast Promethean vista.

Sergeant Rosa is tasked with the job of receiving reports or complaints at the front desk of the Daedalus Consortium Security Center. She smiles pleasantly and maintains a calming, collected tone while speaking to the Belter and his escort.

Sergeant Rosa says: Hello, I’m Sergeant Rosa. Has something happened? What seems to be the problem?

Me: Can we talk to someone about a possible crime?

  • This Belter here, Thom Ling, needs to fill out a missing persons report.

This Belter here, Thom Ling, needs to fill out a missing persons report

Me: This Belter here, Thom Ling, he needs to fill out a missing persons report.

Thom is preoccupied and in a frantic state of discombobulation.

With soft concern, the sergeant quietly speaks to Thom Ling.

Sergeant Rosa says: Have you lost someone here on Daedalus, sir?

  • Ask Thom Ling to explain the situation to Sergeant Rosa.

Ask Thom Ling to explain the situation to Sergeant Rosa

Me: You should tell her what happened, Thom.

Thom Ling responds in a hurried pace.

Thom Ling says: My boys, Jox and Joh, Twins, they are. They’re gone. I don’t know where they could have gone to. They’ve not never run off before. Someone took ‘em. Both of ‘em. With me right there. And my cargo – I can’t, I can’t…

  • Assist Thom Ling in expressing haste.

Assist Thom Ling in expressing haste

Me: He’s a cargo pilot with a scheduled haul. He said that his sons were with him in the Market, but then vanished. He has to go! Is there anything you can do to help him?!

Sergeant Rosa says: Sir, we will fill the report and do what we can. All of the Consortium Security Offices are linked, sir. If you must go, you can get updates from any Consortium Security Office in the system, with only the slightest of delay.

She slides him a slate as he mutters panic through tears.

  • Ask if more could be done.

Ask if more could be done

Me: Is there anything else to be done? Anything before he has to leave?

While you speak to Sergeant Rosa, Thom Ling continues to mumble while coping with the documentation on the slate.

Thom Ling says: My boys… I just can’t …. They’re so small … who would…

  • Listen to Sergeant Rosa.

Listen to Sergeant Rosa

Me: Anything, Sergeant Rosa?

Sergeant Rosa says: As soon as the paperwork is signed, we will start scouring the security footage. If something comes up before he departs, we’ll ping him. Yes, right away. In the meantime, if you want to help more, you could ask around for information. Someone might have seen the young boys. Just come back to me with anything you might have found out. We even offer creds for useful information pertaining to open cases.

  • I’ve done enough. Good luck, Thom Ling.
  • Agree to help in the case of Thom Ling's missing twins.

Agree to help in the case of Thom Ling's missing twins

Me: I’ll do everything I can, Thom. Will you be okay to get to the Port on your own?

Thom Ling struggles with the difficult task of filling out the painful information on his sons. He nods, pale, tear-streaked, and weak.

Thom Ling says: Yes, my friend. Thank you. Please… you have done so much, thank you for this help. I have other children at home, and a wife… this job… this job is our survival.

Sergeant Rosa says: We’ll see that he gets to his ship. He’s lucky to have found such a compassionate bystander in you. Remember, bring anything you’ve learned to me before you leave Daedalus. The boys can’t have gone far.

  • Agree to help with investigation.

Agree to help with investigation

Sergeant Rosa says: If you’re still offering assistance, you could ask around for information. Someone might have seen the young boys. But I’d avoid accusing anyone outright. Just come back to me with anything you might have found out. We even offer creds for useful information pertaining to open cases.

New goals: Check around Daedalus Station for people who may help in your investigation.

Go to the Sickbay and talk to Dr. Roberts

Next NPC: Dr. Roberts, Sick bay, Daedalus

  • Wait patiently for an opportunity to speak with Dr. Roberts

Wait patiently for an opportunity to speak with Dr. Roberts

The Moemedi Medical Bay shines of cleanliness with only a few spattered spots evidencing recent urgent care. Dr. Roberts, a pleasant petite man, is engaged in a conversation with a receptionist as he cleans his hands with sanitary gel. He turns his attention to you as you enter.

Dr. Roberts says: Ah, hello there. Are you in need of medical assistance?

  • Ask if the twins have been seen.

Ask if the twins have been seen

Me: Excuse me, I’m looking for a pair of young Belter boys. Have they been through here looking for help?

Dr. Roberts says: Young Belter boys? Are they hurt?

Dr. Roberts shows immediate concern and turns his attention to the inquiry.

  • Elaborate.

Elaborate

Me: Well, I don’t know. They’re missing. I wondered if they came through here?

Dr. Roberts says: Belter boys? Hmm… No… though there was a kid. A little thing, not a Belter. One of the Dead Eyes, judging from the robes. She said her friends were hurt playing around the security gate of the phosphorus plant. By the time someone was ready to go with her, she was gone.

He flicks a thumb in the direction of the smiling receptionist.

Dr. Roberts says: Daisy here called down to the plant. They said they didn’t have any hurt kids mulling around.

  • Question the receptionist, Daisy.

Question the receptionist, Daisy

Me: What do you know about that little Dead Eye girl?

Daisy says: She’s a little weird, that kid. I’ve seen her around the Market, always acting odd. She’s not from The Ruins, though… her robes are always fresh and clean. You could likely find her in The Residential area nearest to the Market. I think her name is Juno.

  • Thank them for the insight.

Thank them for the insight

Me: Well, thank you for the information.

Dr. Roberts says: Good luck. A pair of Belter boys should be easy to spot in a place like this: we're awash in Dead Eyes. Good folks, once you get used to them. Hope you find the boys.

New goals: Maybe it's time to return to The Market for clues…

Go to the Market and talk to the Parka Shop Girl

Next NPC: Parka Shop Girl, Market, Daedalus

Speak with the Parka Shop Girl again

The market is buzzing with busy activity. It seems wise to locate the Parka Shop Girl to see if there's anything she might have anything more to add to the investigation of the mystery of the lost children. She finishes a sales transaction, sighs at your approach, and folds her arms flatly. The constant whirring of atmospheric conversations ring through the air.

Me: Excuse me, …hello again.

The Parka Shop Girl says: We see you have returned?

  • Request insight.

Request insight

Me: I am back, yes. I was wondering if you could think of anything else that could help in finding those boys?

Parka Shop Girl says: Focused on signing the delivery order. Next moment, those two were gone. A very odd mystery, indeed.

  • Press further.

Press further

Me: There isn’t anything that strikes you as odd? Nothing unusual stands out?

Parka Shop Girl says: There was a strange pair of … clones, one would say. A man and a woman. They were wearing similar clothing to one another. Plain black fabric. Visitors. This one does not know where they’re from or where they’re going.

  • Ask about 'clones'.

Ask about 'clones’

Me: How do you know they were clones?

Parka Shop Girl says: Those were empty.

  • Inquire about her apparent insight.

Inquire about her apparent insight

Me: Empty? What do you mean by empty? You think clones are empty?

Parka Shop Girl says: Yes, ‘empty’. No soul…

She shifts from indignant to a faux compassion.

Parka Shop Girl says: We worry for those husks; those that forsake the One Life. It is mentioned it because it struck as odd to watch two obvious clones move about our home so … brazenly. They seem to like to creep around … Anyway, they were seen, then the Belter came up with his boys, then … when we noticed the boys were gone, those two clones were gone.

  • Shift the conversation to questions about Juno.

Shift the conversation to questions about Juno

Me: I wanted to ask you about something else. Someone told me that a little girl named Juno comes around the Market. Said she was worried about some friends of hers getting hurt while playing. Do you know Juno?

Parka Shop Girl says: Juno? Certainly, she is part of The One, The One is part of her. Sweet little star-child. What do you want with her?

  • Ask if there could be a connection

Ask if there could be a connection

Me: Could it be that ‘her friends’ are actually the Belter twins? Maybe they all ran off to play together?

The Parka Girl softly laughs and shakes her head.

Parka Shop Girl says: Juno playing with Belters? No, this is doubtful. The One tends to keep to our own kind to avoid trouble. Especially when the visitors to Daedalus are as thick as they’ve been lately. Many come, some stay, some go. We don’t allow our children to get mixed up with outsiders, no offense intended. Some outsiders can be quite cruel.

  • Mention the phosphorus plant.

Mention the phosphorus plant

Me: They were playing at the phosphorus plant, I was told. Someone said some kids got hurt.

Parka Shop Girl says: No, certainly not. Juno’s mother is the director of the phosphorus Plant. A very important role in a very important place for us. She would never allow Juno to play there, let alone bring friends. She’s probably playing with the other children in the Residential District. She knows better than to misbehave. She is a good child. A star-child of One Life.

  • Give thanks for her time.

Give thanks for her time

Me: Thanks for the chat.

Parka Shop Girl says: We do hope the small ones are recovered. Perhaps look in at the Our Hand of Life Bar? Many travelers spend time there. A traveler may have seen a thing to share.

New goals: The Parka Shop Girl suggests checking the Our Hand of Life Bar for information.

Wave to get the attention of the man working at the bar

While flagging down the barkeep, you notice that the pub is filled with people, most are Dead Eyes, a few are travelers. The Dead Eyes appear to observe you with interested suspicion while an elderly Belter sits at the end of the bar in quiet solitude.

Me: Hey. I’m wondering if you’ve seen a set of twins? Young boys. Belters.

The Dead Eye Barkeep doesn’t seem particularly friendly and regards the question with a frown.

The Barkeep says: Why would you be looking for a pair of young Belters, traveler?

  • Ponder a reply.

Ponder a reply

While in thought, with a scan of the room, it is evident that the interest in the pair of young Belters has drawn the attention of a few patrons. A small cluster of Dead Eye men are huddled around a table and toss glances of interest toward the questioning, while at the end of the bar, an elderly Belter pilot offers a concerned glance.

Me: The boys went missing from their father…

The Barkeep says: …and?

  • Ask about the cluster of Sect members watching the conversation.
  • The elderly Belter seems keenly invested in the words of the missing twins.

Ask about the cluster of Sect members watching the conversation

Me: Yes, as I said…the boys went missing from their father… who are those people watching me?

With an overworked scoff, he waves dismissively.

The Barkeep says: Go ask them yourself.

You approach the table surrounded with young Dead Eye men just as the Belter seated at the bar is exiting. They leer and smirk like wolves at the closeness of the lamb. A dark-haired man with a thin grin seems to be the speaker of the group.

Me: Hello, gentlemen. …

Brother Erasmus says: Blessings of the Star unto you, traveler. How may we be of assistance to your woes on this fortuitous day? I am Erasmus, and we here would like to see you less troubled.

New goals: Talk to Brother Erasmus in the Bar.

Me: No… They are the sons of a cargo pilot…

Brother Erasmus says: A friend of yours?

Me: Well, no. I mean, we just met…

Brother Erasmus says: And yet you still help? We are honored to meet such a soul of kindness, traveler. Truly, it does much good to encounter a Promethean heart in the body of a stranger. Alas, we know of nothing unusual of late.

  • Ask about Juno.

Ask about Juno

Me: I heard that they may have been in the company of a little girl named Juno. A resident to Daedalus. Do you know her?

Brother Erasmus offers a response through an icy glare.

Brother Erasmus says: We do not know such a name. A little girl you say? A little sister to us here? Why, we know of no little sister with such a name. Many rumors are made of nothing at all. We grow accustomed to falsehoods and suggestion. No little sister would lure strangers away from their security.

  • Conclude the conversation.
  • Ask Brother Erasmus if he has anything more to say.

Me: …I appreciate the chat…Can you think of anything else that may help?

Brother Erasmus says: Traveler, it occurs to us that you one of such a pure One Heart…such a kindly One Soul, that well, it feels to us that you are already family. Nourish yourself in our teachings. Do stop by The Peerage to hear the good word and find your life renewed. You may find your place among these vast stars here … with us… forever.

Me: What if I’m a clone? Would there still a place for me ‘here…with you…forever’?

Disgusted Erasmus recoils and shakes his head.

Brother Erasmus says: Pleasant journeys to you, traveler. Do be off, now.

His distaste punctuates the words as the other Dead Eyes look away, appalled.

New goals: It may be time to seek out Juno yourself. The Peerage seems like an intentional dead-end.

The Residential District of Daedalus Station is a neat row of efficient and tidy cylinder pod homes situated along a grid pattern. The walkways are aisles flanked with banners emblazoned with Promethean Tenants such as ‘One Life is All’, ‘One Soul is We’, and ‘One We is Us’. A small girl plays outside of one of the homes. Her hair is neatly bundled atop her head and her tunic is free of grime. Upon closer inspection, it would appear that the child is trying to bend her fingers back as far as possible before the pain causes her to relent.

Me: Hello. I’m looking for a little girl named Juno. Do you know her?

Juno says: Knows what we are. We are her…We are us. Who be thee? Brother? Sister? Traveler? All?

Juno merrily continues.

Me: The Doctor at Moemedi Medical said that a little girl named Juno, part of the Promethean Sect, may have been playing with the twins at the phosphorus plant. They may be hurt. So, I asked around more and found out that Juno could be found in the Residential District. I went to talk with her and found that she may have seen the boys, but she wasn’t very clear with her words. She said something about them ‘finding other friends’ and that they ‘aren’t alone’. I don’t know if it’s much help, but that’s what I’ve got.

Sergeant Rosa says: Found other friends? Not alone? Where did Juno tell you that she last saw them?

  • Juno said…

Sergeant Rosa quickly dials up security footage and shakes her head at the quality.
