Introduction

You have a job: Visa Inspection, accepted at Nouveau Limoges in the Sol system.

Talk to Phillipe in the Port on Nouveau Limoges.

Next NPC: Phillipe, Port, Nouveau Limoges

  • Ask Phillipe about the Visa Inspection job.

Phillipe looks you over briefly, his face curling as though he's smelled something foul.

He says: It’s amazing the sort of help they expect me to make due with.

Sighing in exasperation, he gestures for you to follow him. He leads you to a line of people trying to enter the station. A worker stands at the head of the line, backed up by a pair of guards. They look over each person’s visa, then scan it with a slate. Phillipe hands you a slate of your own to use.

Phillipe says: Every one of these visitors needs to have their credentials examined before we can allow them aboard the station. The program on this slate will let you scan their visas. It would take a particularly good fake to fool it.

  • "Why all the extra inspections?"

Me: Why all the extra inspections?

Phillipe says: Relations are not always the best between the Consortium and the Gaule Protectorate. We prefer to control who comes to our station.

Inspect 5 visas in the Port.

  • Inspect a visa.

(Intelligence check)

You relieve the worker at the head of the queue and take their place. The next person in line steps forward and hands you their visa. You scan it with your slate. A word appears in the center of your screen in a large, blocky font: “VALID.” You wave them through.

Inspect 4 visas in the Port.

  • Continue your work.

(Intelligence check)

The next person hands you their visa and you again scan it with your slate. “EXPIRED” appears on your screen. A guard grabs them brusquely and removes them from the line. Afterwards, Phillipe reappears.

Phillipe says: Listen, I don't want to alarm you but… A passenger manifest for a shuttle flagged a wanted fugitive on board. I don't know if he'll try to board the station but, if he does…. Well. Just stay calm and let us do our job.

Phillipe steps away again, but you suddenly notice a couple of extra armed guards taking up positions towards the rear of the room.

Inspect 3 visas in the Port.

  • Keep working.

(Intelligence check)

You scan the next visitor's visa as they look nervously on. After a slight delay, his visa registers as valid. Relieved, he moves on.

Inspect 2 visas in the Port.

  • Inspect the next visa.

(Intelligence check)

You scan another visa and see the words, "ENTRY DENIED: WANTED PERSON" flash on the slate screen. The man's eyes widen in horror, seeing the watching guards suddenly approach. Before you can react, he pulls something from under his cloak and points it at them!

The fugitive screams: Don't even think about it ya filthy drecks! Unless you wanna zap of ma lil' jolter here!

He starts edging away, back towards the Shuttle Bay, still pointing what looks like a taser. The two guards cautiously step forward, weapons half-raised. The stand-off slowly moves across the room, with you and the other queuing passengers watching nervously.

  • Don't move. Wait to see what happens.
  • Surprise the fugitive. Knock the weapon from his hand.

Wait:

You watch frozen in fear as the scene unfolds in slow motion.

A guard shouts: FINAL WARNING, SER! LOWER YOUR WEAPON OR—

But he doesn't finish. Instead of a word, there's a strange hissing noise as a thin metal wire fires across the room, sending the guard into a grotesque spasm, dropping his weapon! Then, something else fires, and the fugitive hits the deck, howling in pain.

He screams: AAArrrGHHhhhh! My sh—- shoulder… You SCUM!!!

Stunned by the brief outbreak of chaos, you watch as more guards arrive to secure the scene. They clip a hand-restrainer on the angry man, then lead him away, while others tend to their injured colleague. Within half a segment, some semblance of normality has been restored.

Another guard says: Please, resume your activities, citizens! The situation is under control.

Still somewhat shocked, you beckon the next person in the queue forward. They too seem dazed by the preceding episode, but eventually edge forward and present a slate with a visa document on the display.

Surprise:
(Agility check)

A guard shouts: FINAL WARNING, SER! LOWER YOUR WEAPON OR—

As he speaks, you choose your moment, leaping forward from your desk and throwing yourself at the fugitive! Blindsided, he stumbles; his weapon clattering to the floor! Then, something fires, and he hits the deck, howling in pain.

He screams: AAArrrGHHhhhh! My sh—- shoulder… You SCUM!!!

Stunned by the brief outbreak of chaos, you watch as more guards arrive to secure the scene. They clip a hand-restrainer on the angry man, then lead him away, while another comes to thank you.

He says: You did well, <name>. Above and beyond your duty. I'll make sure the boss is made aware of your bravery. Please, resume your activities now. The situation is under control.

After a short wait another worker taps you on the shoulder and says your shift is done. As you leave, a glowing alert in the corner of your vision alerts you to an incoming CORETECHS message.

GIS (GAULE IMMIGRATION SERVICES): Your exemplary contribution to the security of the Protectorate has been noted. Reward issued herewith.

You have received 10.00 credits.

You accept the incoming transfer, then continue towards Phillipe's office to collect your regular pay.

  • Collect your pay from Phillipe.

Phillipe takes the slate back, clearly busy dealing with the repercussions of recent events.

Phillipe says: What a mess! These incidents require so much documentation. I'll be here all day… I suppose you're wanting your pay, then? Here. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm busy.

Congratulations!
